NV Education Savings Accounts
The 2017 Legislative Session was a bitter disappointment to the thousands of Nevada families who applied for the Nevada ESA program. Nevada parents made it clear: they wanted ESAs. Dozens of parents attended hearings, legislative meetings and rallies all in support of the program. When lawmakers choose not to fund ESAs, a clear message was given to Nevada parents about the priorities of lawmakers — political expediency over education.
While ESA’s remain unfunded, lawmakers did agree to a one-time increase for the state’s Opportunity Scholarship — a scholarship program for low-income students funded by tax credits —thereby giving a handful of Nevada families some form of educational choice. However, the fight for ESAs, and educational choice for every student in Nevada, will continue forward.
